This week I made a quilted love bird pillow.

I just noticed how dirty my carpet is...I swear i'm vacuuming right now......no worries.

DIY Lace Doily Boxes

Over springbreak, about a month ago, I renovated my bedroom at home. The last time it underwent a transformation was when I was 10, and thankfully my taste has moved past the preppy-pink&green-matchy-wonderland-hell. I painted everything white, purchased some new wooden antique furniture, and invested my free time in quite a few DIY projects. I'm happy to report that it no longer looks like a watermelon threw up.

For one DIY project I gathered up some paper doilies and pieces of lace from around my house.

I then painted some old pink boxes white, taped on the lace/doilies, and went crazy with silver spray paint.

Ta da. 3 of the boxes sitting on my bed in the midst of the renovation :)

This project was so easy, and I was quite happy with the white on metallic result!

Fur Patchwork In The Library

Fur. Whats my view on it?

I love the way it looks!

Fall, winter, and spring...trims, coats, and patches= :)

As a vegetarian/sustainably conscience person, however, I do have a couple of qualms.

I personally only support sustainable/vintage fur. In the fall I went to a huge leather and fur house where all of the hides, fur, and leather came from meat factories.

I felt like it was a positive thing--the recycling of leather! Since people are never going to stop eating meat, it seems a lot more sustainable to wear the furs of animals that have already been killed than to have the furs thrown away in a landfill. This being said you really do need to know where your products come from, and I try to make a conscience effort to not support companies who kill animals solely for their fur. I try to think in a Native American way...that every part of the animal should be used when its killed.

Anyyyyyway. The leather house gave me some fur/leather scraps that I decided to use in a little DIY project. Yay!

A few weeks ago I purchased a JanSport backpack for $5 at Salvation Army.

I decided to cut up some fur patches and sew them on my backpack.

Then I went to the Pratt Library, 'cause I love it there .......... (it's one of, in my opinion, the most beautiful places on campus).

The book stacks were designed by Tiffany's. The floors, ceilings, and stairs are all made of glass, while the book stack shelves go through the floor continuously for 5 floors!

You can see people walking above you which is fun.

Between the 2nd and 3rd floor.

You can also peer all the way down through the slits in the floor, and see no end...just book shelves :)

While taking pictures I saw this book, which was one of my childhood favorites. Smile.

Passing Out Love

Sorry for not posting in SO LONG!

I swear I have a decent excuse!
I got a new computer a few weeks ago, and couldn't for the life of me figure out how to sync it to my camera. Don't worry....the problem is now solved, and I can happily blog again.

Ever since I was a little kid making valentines has been my THING. For as long as I can remember I have purchased doilies and have handcrafted cards for my amigos. This year I went a little crazy and made over 50. Since I obviously don't have 50 friends I took half of the cards down to the subway to pass out to strangers. It was actually really thrilling, and made me feel like I was seizing life (or something else cliche). It was a perfect way to spend Valentines Day. Passing out love :)

A quick shout out to my sister Paula: Sorry I didn't send you a Valentine...I couldn't get my act together to get one to Holland by the 14th!! The card I received was appreciated though!

Sunglasses

We wear them on the beach, in place of headbands, and while skiing down mountains. We all know and love them--of course I'm talking about sunglasses. 

Thrifty Sunglasses: Since trends repeat over time, your grandfathers attic is the perfect hiding spot for UV protecting treasures! If you think Ray Bans made their fashion debut in 2008, you are seriously mistaken--the coolest RBs I've seen are the vintage ones that made your mom go crazy for your dad when they first met.

Having said this, we all aren't lucky enough to have tons of vintage lying around our families homes. Thrift stores and antique stores are GREAT, but if you are having trouble stumbling upon a good find I have another alternative...

About a year ago my older sister, Paula, and I created a thing we call 'Spotting.' I will dedicate a future post to the art of Spotting--for now since it is the peak of sunglass season, here are some photos of some glasses I've made:

My school gave out free plastic sunglasses, equipped with awkward writing on the sides, that I personally would never wear. Instead of throwing them away I recycled and turned them into something new and fun!

Each colored dot is painted onto the frame of of the glasses. I think they look like nerds :]
